Every super hero you have heard of brings a special skill to the table, whether it's flying, having superhuman strength, or the ability to freeze time. The Hearos 4 Hire Mixtape presented by DJ Obi is not that different in concept. Every mc involved is one-of-a-kind, with an ability unlike any other. Hearos 4 Hire is the brainchild of DJ Obi, who worked with each emcee directly and decided to put everyone together on one project. You have Kaliban, South Central bred battle rapper known for quick ferocious flows. As a true life veteran of real street wars, Kaliban is a terrorist by nature, an expert with guns, and a grimm reaper on tracks. Then there is the wild card, Meyer Wolfsheim, the baritone wordsmith with a bone to pick. Adopting the name of a notorious gangster from the novel The Great Gatsby, Meyer's personality is in itself a mixture of sophistication and civility at odds with an undercurrent of anger and frustration. Obvious steps up with that smooth professional flow, a crisp vocal tone, and a mellow swagger undoubtedly influenced by witnessing Snoop freestyle in the park back in the day. With a style so unique, it's obvious that this Long Beach emcee is a Hearo indeed. Then there is Big Swish who comes with that classic delivery and cavalier confidence. Like Kaliban & Wolfsheim, Swish has a characteristically low voice that booms on tracks, filling your eardrums with its suave texture. Always redefining cool, Swish makes himself at home on every beat he touches, words couched comfortably in the rhythm. Last but definitely not least, Avatar enters the scene with a hybrid flow of Oakland, Los Angeles, and his own quirky cadence, Av's words swing to the music like an irate chimpanzee from a vine. Dread-locked rogue producer Oddio contributes a couple beats and a guest appearance from mc Jag Bomb (FRC) adds more flavor to the track Operation Red Eye. Within the H4H organization, there are groups within the group. DJ Obi and Kaliban (co-founders of Think Green Records IN 2004) have coined themselves The Mint while Meyer Wolfsheim & Obvious are known as Zombe Squad. Hearos 4 Hire is the headquarters or mothership, if you will, for these diverse collab-orations. DJ Obi keeps this ship flying by dedicating himself to the mix, never allowing a dull moment, with accurate blends, effective cuts, and mixing in 6 original productions including The Mint's ‘Sewaside’ from the 2007 horror/comedy movie Drive Thru (Lions Gate) as the final track. The result is a one hour adventure, a meeting of the minds, and an exciting hip-hop saga.
HEAROS 4 HIRE
OBVIOUS
AVATAR
From Long Beach reppin that true hip-hop, Obvious takes pride in bringin the light to all wack mc's who need a blueprint. Obvious is against cookie-cutter mc's with redundant concepts where the whole album sound like one big remix. Holdin it down for the Beach City, Obvious crafts each lyric for true hip-hop fans who can see the difference between the truth and the fake. Also a talented producer in his own right, Obvious continues to grow as an artist at an alarming rate. Not only does he represent on the Hearos 4 Hire MIxtape, he also spits some fire with Meyer Wolfsheim on the Zombe Squad album. Look out world, it's Obvious.
As a dj/producer Obi has devoted his existence to hip-hop in the form of beats and cuts. As a kid he witnessed Jam Master Jay (R.I.P) on the turntables and that inspired him to get into hip-hop. Countless hours spent on the turntables, the MPC, and the mixing board have seasoned Obi into a hip-hop supernova with an underground catalog that pushes the boundaries of music. As the founder of Hearos 4 Hire, and co-founder of The Mint & Think Green Records, Obi's mission in the game is to consistently release solid material that will withstand the test of time.
As the founding member of DubL-FM and powerhouse producer of Dub, Down Tempo, Drum and Bass, and sounds which can't even be labeled, Oddio has made a name for himself as a rogue producer, working with several L.A. based artists and promoting those good vibes. Oddio not only produces beats, he is also an artist with canvases that would trip out Salvador Dali and a skilled photographer as well.
Avatar is proud to be the purveyor of “Thinking Man’s Hip Hop”. Delivered in his throaty, barbwire-tinged style, Avatar’s lyrics reflect all points of his personal philosophy, from the borderline absurd to the abstract. Known for his maniacal, intimidating stage presence and his barely controllable anger when he’s attacking ignorant belief systems, he has undoubtedly earned his place in the Los Angeles underground hip hop scene. Coupled with the ubiquitous DJ Obi, "Deus Ex Machina" became a landmark in “Thinking-Man’s Hip Hop”—an album so dense in content it warrants several listens to grasp the scope of its importance in today’s largely superficial hip hop scene.
Big Swish brings that cavalier swagger to the Hearos 4 Hire. With a robust voice and fluid delivery, you can hear the years of experience in every verse. Currently unsigned but working with Think Green in the spirit of collaboration, Swish delivers some of the most memorable lines on the H4H Mixtape. With freestlyes like Allen Iverson in a pickup game, beats that crush, live show antics, honey dips and big doja, Big Swish is holdin it down. With a forthcoming self-produced solo album and a major role in the H4H movement, Big Swish is a true artist who keeps it movin.
You already know your boy Kaliban from The Mint and past projects including Trigga-nometry, Nino Brown Mix, Pirate Radio Mix, and the Fireball Mix. As co-founder of Think Green Records and The Mint, Kaliban spits every verse as if his life depended on it. Always stayin hungry and keepin it creative, Kaliban has mastered the art of free-stylin as well as writing. Kaliban is known for his low voice which has a smoothness to it as well as a merciless intensity which keeps you involved in every word of every line. Kaliban holds it down as the rock solid foundation of Hearos 4 HIre.
Meyer Wolfsheim is a mysterious oddity but we love him anyway. With a baritone delivery and subject matter ranging from haunted houses to sluts in flapper dresses (what is he smokin?), MW continues to break the rules and surprise us at every opportunity. Currently building his repertoire as a solo artist and stacking tracks Zombe Squad with ryme partner Obvious, Wolfsheim is a true Hearo 4 Hire, keeping the non-stop work ethic and sense of humor. Whether he's ryming over a throwback beat with influences from the 1920s or a club banger, Meyer Continues to express himself in the only way he knows how, through words.
